FX Caprara Automotive Group began in 1974 with a bold move and a clear vision. At the time, Francis Xavier “FX” Caprara was managing a dealership in Scarsdale, NY, when a chance conversation with a customer led to an opportunity to purchase 90 acres of land in Watertown. After five years of traveling north to explore the region, FX and his wife Helen made the decision to relocate their young family — drawn by the chance to build something of their own in a community that shared their values.

That same year, FX secured his first dealer license and opened FX Caprara Auto Sales on the property where the family would also make their home. With just three used cars and a commitment to doing things the right way, the Capraras laid the foundation for a business built on hard work, trust, and family involvement. FX and Helen ran the business side by side, with their children involved from the start — creating a culture rooted in hands-on service and personal connection.

The company’s first new-car franchise opened in 1992, marking a major milestone in its growth. From there, the group steadily expanded across the North Country, fueled by a loyal customer base and a reputation for straightforward business. What started in a backyard evolved into a multi-location dealership group representing numerous franchises across the region — all guided by the same values that shaped those early years.

Today, FX Caprara Automotive Group is led by Charlie and Billy Caprara, who continue to carry out the vision their parents began — combining family-driven leadership with a commitment to local service and long-term relationships. With more than 350 team members and a strong presence throughout the region, the group remains rooted in the same principles it was founded on: integrity, hard work, and community connection.
